Integrated built-environment consulting
Thoughtful spaces. Connected expertise.
Architecture & Engineering (A&E).
Connected from the start.
Founded in Kozhikode, Kerala, URU brings architecture, interiors, engineering and project consulting together for projects in South India. Our Dubai practice provides architecture, interior and landscape design across the GCC.
01
Spatial design that resolves programme, place and purpose within the specific conditions of a site, climate and culture.
We begin with a reading of site, climate and culture. In Kerala, courtyard ventilation, deep overhangs and laterite. In the Gulf, solar shading, thermal isolation and material performance under extreme heat.
02
Environments shaped by material, light and human experience, resolved alongside architecture from the earliest stage.
Material selection, lighting strategy and spatial sequence resolved alongside architecture from the first sketch — not applied as a finishing layer once the building is complete.
03
Ground-level interventions that bind building to ecology. In Kerala's climate, landscape is thermal, hydrological and cultural infrastructure.
Rainwater harvesting, tree canopy preservation and permeable ground treatments are standard practice at URU, not premium add-ons. Landscape is thermal, hydrological and cultural infrastructure.
04
Load paths and structural logic engineered for longevity, by a team that works alongside architects from concept stage.
Foundation design for variable substrates — coastal alluvial soils, rock-dominant terrain — and structural logic resolved from concept stage alongside the architecture, not reviewed after the design is fixed.
05
Mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems that perform silently, designed to be maintainable, not merely code-compliant.
Mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems coordinated from the earliest design stage, eliminating the costly clashes that arise when services are treated as an afterthought.
06
Programme, cost and coordination held to account by one team managing both design and construction phases.
One team holds programme, cost and coordination across both design and construction phases. Single point of accountability for the full delivery lifecycle.
07
Environmental performance integrated from concept to operation, not retrofitted at the end of design development.
Passive cooling strategies, embodied carbon assessment, whole-life costing and regulatory compliance for green certification frameworks — embedded in every project from the first sketch.
08
Infrastructure capacity, drainage, solar orientation and phasing resolved alongside the spatial vision, before a single building is designed.
Master planning sets the frame that every other discipline works within. URU approaches it as an engineering problem as much as a design one, so the plan that results can be built and serviced rather than merely drawn.
09
Movement planning at building, district and city scale, responding to client need across mixed-use and masterplan work.
Access strategies, parking provisions, pedestrian flow and public transport connections resolved as part of the design — not submitted to highway authorities as a compliance afterthought.
10
Site assessment, impact analysis and ecological stewardship for projects navigating complex regulatory conditions.
Site assessment and environmental impact analysis for projects in Kerala's Western Ghats proximity, the UAE's coastal ecology, and wherever development intersects with protected land.

URU was founded on a single conviction: that architecture and engineering practiced as separate disciplines produces worse outcomes for clients and worse buildings for the world. A decade of projects, published internationally and recognised by critics and peers across South Asia and the Middle East, has only deepened that belief. In 2025 the practice formalised its Gulf presence by establishing URU Design Services LLC in Dubai. The work continues to be built on disciplinary depth, institutional knowledge and an unwavering standard of integrated delivery.

The Partners
In 2015, four friends started URU in a small room in Kozhikode — built on a single refusal: that architecture and engineering should never be separate disciplines. The practice is named after the URU dhows of Beypore, wooden vessels shaped without a single nail, built precisely for the journey ahead.
Follow the practice for project updates, published work and perspectives on integrated design and engineering.
Follow URU Consulting → Safder Machilakath →URU organises its sectoral knowledge across seven domain areas. The disciplines — architecture, engineering, sustainability — are the same in every sector. What changes is the brief, the regulatory environment and the specific technical demands of the building type.
Sustainability at URU is not a service line. It is the evaluative lens through which every design decision is made, from passive cooling strategy in a Kerala courtyard to whole-life costing in a GCC commercial brief.
Our sustainability commitmentBuildings that restore rather than deplete. Net-positive outcomes for biodiversity, water cycle and embodied carbon.
Design that serves communities equitably. Daylight, ventilation and material durability are baseline obligations, not premiums.
Whole-life costing and adaptive reuse potential as the true measure of value. A building that lasts 100 years is more sustainable than one that replaces itself every 25.
Courtyard ventilation, laterite thermal mass, deep overhangs and cross-ventilation: the passive logic native to this landscape.
URU is a practice run on competence, creativity and self-integrity, not surveillance. We are building for the long run and we want people who think that way.
